A New Chapter Begins with Fresh Faces and Renewed Determination
The St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies women’s volleyball team is gearing up for an exciting 2024-25 season, eager to build on last year's strong performance. Under the leadership of former head coach Don McKay, the team made it to the ACAA playoffs, falling just short of the championship. That experience has fueled the returning players’ desire to push harder and aim for a different outcome this year.
This season marks a new chapter for the team as a fresh coaching staff, led by Kim Colpitts, takes the reins. "This is my first season as head coach, and while we have some returning and new assistant coaches, change brings both challenges and excitement," said Coach Colpitts. "Our focus, effort, and intensity in training have been fantastic. We are continuing to build on what Don and his coaching staff left behind, and everyone is excited and ready for what lies ahead."
“I am super excited for this season; preseason is going really well and everyone is working hard together. I feel like this year is going to be a strong year for us” expressed Kathleen Boyle.
Along with the new coaching staff, the Tommies have welcomed six dynamic new players to their roster, injecting energy and drive into the program. "These new players have come in with the right mindset—they understand our goals and bring a competitive edge that fits perfectly with our team culture." "We expect them to contribute both on and off the court right away."
A key element for the season will be leadership; returning athletes are looking forward to the challenge."The dynamic within this group is remarkable. They understand the importance of leadership both on and off the court, and we will rely heavily on them this season." Returning athletes bring experience in key positions, which will be crucial in guiding newer players.
Despite a young roster and some changes within the program, the team has showcased an aggressive style of play during preseason training, which bodes well for the competitive season ahead. “I am really looking forward to the season starting; intensity in the gym has been great. Everyone is working towards a common goal of improvement to be a strong and competitive team this upcoming season," said Julia Campbell.
As the season kicks off, the Frederickton volleyball community will once again play a vital role in supporting the Tommies. "The volleyball community here is fantastic, and we truly appreciate all the support we receive," said Kim Colpitts. "We’re excited to see family, friends, alumni, and the STU community at our games. Don’t miss our home opener on Saturday, October 26th against MSVU in The Pit—it's going to be a great season!"
