Tommies Weekend Recap Nov 7-9
Last weekend delivered yet another slate of can’t miss action. Five St. Thomas University (STU) teams hit the road for their respective games, while two squads remained in Fredericton. Most of the squad are well into their regular season action. They used the games to build on their early season success, which the Tommies hope to replicate going forward.
Basketball teams sweep Think Pink Weekend
STU’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams were at home last weekend. The teams matched up with the Crandall Chargers for an afternoon interprovincial tilt. They were the only squads to play in front of the home fans. Both matches were taken by the Tommies. Last weekend also marked the team’s Think Pink Games.
The Women’s Basketball team kicked off the doubleheader on the right foot. STU started the game with a five-point run. They took a 32-29 lead into the halftime break. Your Tommies continued their momentum in the third quarter, scoring 24 points. In the end, STU won 65-45. Paige Leblanc led the charge with 15 points and seven rebounds.
STU’s Men’s team were equally impressive. The squad also tasted victory over the Chargers, despite struggling to find their footing out of the gate. However, STU began pulling away toward the end of the first quarter. They did not look back. The Tommies held a 33-point lead going into the fourth. STU won 93-61. Ceejay Hanson led the chaegre in the victory. He scored 27 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Tommies Cross Country runners crack top 100 at Nationals
STU’s Men’s and Women's Cross Country teams wrapped up their season last weekend. The school had three runners competing at the CCAA National Championships in PEI Kensea Aaron and Arjun Godara ran in the men’s race. Meanwhile, Elisabeth Vigneau represented the green and gold on the Women’s side. All three finished in the top 100.
Vigneau began the day with a successful result. She finished with a time of just under 28 minutes, good enough for 79th place. Vigneau’s time was two minutes better than her previous attempt to run the course on the Island. She took part in an exhibition race at the location in September, as did her male counterparts.
Meanwhile, STU’s Men’s runners also cracked the top 100 in their race. Aaron finished with a time of 29 minutes and 32 seconds. That result was good enough for 58th place. Godara was not far behind. He competed the eight-kilometer race in just over 33 minutes. That result helped him finish in 95th place.
Tommies Hockey team splits weekend road games
STU’s Women’s Hockey game hit the road last weekend. They played two games in three days, going from Moncton on Friday and then Charlottetown on Sunday. Both matches were decided by two goals or less.
STU began the weekend road swing in Moncton. They took on the UdeM Aigles Blues on Friday night. The game began with a scoreless first period. However, STU fell behind early in the second frame, thanks to a goal by Moncton. UdeM added to their lead with another goal early in the third. STU tied the game midway through the frame. In the end, your Tommies were narrowly defeated 4-2.
Sunday was a different story. The team faced off against the UPEI Panthers. STU went to work on offence off the opening faceoff. Trinity Webber fired a perfect shot 47 seconds into the match. The team held the lead until late in the second, when UPEI tied the game at one. Yet, STU did not break. Megan Kirkpatrick broke the deadlock midway through the third. She found herself on a breakaway and made no mistake. STU held on for a 2-1 win.
Volleyball teams split road games
STU’s Men’s and Women's Volleyball teams were in Truro last weekend. They took the court for a trio of games against the Dalhousie Rams. Two of three games ended with results where the Tommies picked up points.
STU’s Men’s team stole the show. They played two games against Dalhousie, sweeping the weekend. The squad did not drop a set. They took both of their matches by 3-0 consecutive scorelines. Mason Brewster led the way in Saturday's victory. He finished with an impressive 10 kills on 10 attempts. Kalan Noonan was an impact player on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Women’s squad also put in an impressive effort. They had one game last weekend, a match against Dalhousie on Saturday. Your Tommies took the first set over the Rams, in what was a back-and-forth battle that ended in a two-point victory. Unfortunately, STU dropped the next three frames. The team was narrowly defeated three sets to one.
What’s on tap for Next Weekend
Next week’s action is sure to not disappoint. Five will be in action during the fall reading week, with the majority being on the road. Only one team will play in front of the STU faithful.
STU’s Women’s Hockey team kicks off the week. The squad will travel to Sackville on Wednesday for a showdown against the Mount Allison Mounties. Puck drop is set for seven o’clock. STU will travel to Antigonish for a date with the St. FX X-Women on Saturday night.
The Men’s and Women's Basketball teams are also in action next weekend. Both squads will travel to Sackville to take on the Mount Allison Mounties in a pair of evening matches. Tip-off will take place at five o’clock for the Women and seven o’clock for the men.
Also on Saturday, your Women’s Volleyball Tommies are at home against the UKC Blue Devils. First serve is at two o’clock at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. The match will also mark the team’s Think Pink game. The weekend concludes with the Men’s and Women's Volleyball teams traveling to Moncton to take on the Crandall Chargers.
