Tommies Weekend Recap Jan. 16-18
It was a dominant weekend for the St. Thomas University Tommies this past weekend, as every program in action swept their series to secure a perfect 10-0 collective record. The Tommies showcased their depth and skill across four different sports, protecting home ice and court in Fredericton while maintaining an undefeated record on the road in Nova Scotia.
The men's and women's basketball teams won both high-scoring games, putting them at the top of the league. This weekend showcased the Tommies athletic ability and competitive spirit, with a thrilling one-goal hockey game leading to an 8-2 victory the next day. The basketball offence exploded for 115-98 and 127-82 point games, and both the men's and women's volleyball teams finished 2-0 on the road trip.
Women's Hockey Tommies sweep weekend at the Grant-Harvey Centre
The Women’s Hockey team enjoyed a perfect weekend at home, securing two vital victories to move their season record to 15-6-0-1. On Friday night, the Tommies faced off against the StFX X-Women in a defensive battle that ended in a 2-1 win for the Tommies. Nadia Lavoie opened the scoring in the first period, and although StFX tied it in the second, Amy Dvernichuk who was playing in her 100th AUS game netted the game-winner midway through the third frame.
Goaltender Katie Sweeney was the standout performer on Friday, earning the game's first star after turning aside 39 of the 40 shots she faced. The team carried that momentum into Saturday’s matchup against the Mount Allison Mounties, where the offense exploded for an 8-2 victory. Alexie Palchinski led the charge with a goal and an assist to earn player of the game, while Lauren Smith contributed two goals in the lopsided win.
Tommies basketball sweeps Mount Allison at the LB Gym
Both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams protected their home court with back-to-back wins against the visiting Mount Allison Mounties. The Women's Basketball team improved to a 9-1 record, starting the weekend with a commanding 69-41 victory on Saturday where Alyssa Jeffrey led the way with 15 points. They followed up on Sunday with a 70-59 win, powered by matching 19-point performances from Paige Leblanc and Charlee Connors, who also dominated the glass with 13 rebounds.
On the men's side, the Tommies also moved to 9-1 with two high-scoring performances. Saturday’s 115-98 win featured a 26-point game from Evan Valanne and a 26-point game from Marcus Wilson. They saved their best for Sunday, however, crushing the Mounties 127-82 in a game where the Tommies had 9 guys in double digits which helped them with this massive offensive victory.
Volleyball programs remain undefeated on the road
The men's and women's volleyball teams had a highly successful trip to Nova Scotia, winning all four of their matches to start the second semester on a high note. The Women's Volleyball team secured two dominant straight-set victories, defeating the UKC Blue Devils 3-0 on Saturday and following up with another 3-0 sweep of Université Sainte-Anne on Sunday. Kathleen Boyle was a force throughout the weekend, recording 14 kills in the first match and a double-double with 9 kills and 19 digs in the second.
The Men's Volleyball team was equally successful during their visit to Université Sainte-Anne, winning both of their matches by scores of 3-1. Brenton Romanchuk and Kalan Noona led the Tommies attack with 16 kills each on Saturday, and the team maintained their composure through several tight sets on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep for all the teams in action.
What's on Tap for Next Weekend
It is a busy upcoming weekend for the Tommies as several programs head out on the road to maintain their momentum, while the volleyball teams return to Fredericton to compete in front of a home crowd.
The Women’s Hockey team will head out on the road for two key matchups in the AUS. They are scheduled to play on Friday, January 23rd, at Université de Moncton with puck drop at 7:00 PM. They will then travel to take on UPEI on Saturday, January 24th, at 3:00 PM.
Both basketball programs are also away this weekend for a four-game series against the UKC Blue Devils. The Women's Basketball team will take the court on Saturday, January 24th, at 4:00 PM and again on Sunday, January 25th, at 2:00 PM. The Men’s Basketball games will follow each day, with tip-off scheduled for Saturday at 6:00 PM and Sunday at 4:00 PM.
Back at home, the volleyball teams will host Holland College at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym for a series of games. The Women's Volleyball team is slated for two home games, playing on Saturday, January 24th, at 2:00 PM and Sunday, January 25th, at 1:00 PM. The Men's Volleyball team will also be in action against Holland College, with matches scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM.
