Tommies basketball split results at home
STU's Men's and Women's Basketball teams hosted the UNB Saint John Seawolves at the LB Gym on Saturday, with the women’s team winning and the men’s losing in a close game.
The Women's Basketball team (7-1) set the tone early and never looked back and came up with a dominate 72-60 win. Charlee Connors was a force in the paint, leading all scorers with 22 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. The Tommies defense was relentless, forcing 24 turnovers throughout the contest.
The Men's Squad followed with a high-scoring 89-97 loss in a tightly contested match. Despite the loss, the Tommies (7-1) saw strong individual performances from Vincent Lyttleton, who hit five three-pointers to finish with 19 points, and Marcus Wilson, who added 14 points and 3 steals. The game was decided in the fourth quarter where UNBSJ exploded for 34 points to pull away late.
Women's Hockey Tommies sweep Nova Scotia Road trip
STU's Women's Hockey team enjoyed a perfect weekend on the road, securing two important wins to improve their record to 11-6-1.
The Tommies began the weekend Friday night in Halifax with a 4-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers. After Katelin Moffatt opened the scoring on a first-period power play, Megan Kirkpatrick added a goal in the second. Lauren Smith led the way offensively, netting two power-play goals in the third period to seal the win and get player of the game.
The momentum carried into Saturday afternoon against the Saint Mary's Huskies. In a defensive battle that remained scoreless through two periods, the Huskies came out in the third and scored early. Claire Nimegeers found the back of the net in the third with 18 seconds left to tie the game, which eventually to a shootout. Lauren Smith was the lone skater to score in the shootout, securing a 2-1 win for STU. Goaltender Katie Sweeney was stellar all weekend, stopping 39 of 41 shots faced across the two games.
What's on Tap for Next Weekend
It is a massive weekend of home action at STU as several teams look to defend home court, while the volleyball programs officially begin their second-semester schedules.
The women’s hockey team returns to the Grant-Harvey Centre for a pair of home games where they will host their annual Alumni Weekend. They face off against STFX on Friday, January 16th at 7:00 PM, followed by a matchup against the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday, January 17th at 7:00 PM.
Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are back at the LB Gym for a two-game stand against the Mount Allison Mounties. The Women’s Basketball team tips off on Saturday, Jan. 17th at 2:00 PM and again on Sunday, Jan. 18th at 1:00 PM. The Men’s Basketball games follow each day, with tip-off scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17th at 4:00 PM and Sunday, Jan. 18th at 3:00 PM.
The men’s and women’s volleyball programs kick off their second semester with a busy weekend. The Women’s Volleyball team heads out on the road to face the UKC Blue Devils on Saturday, Jan. 17th at 2:00 PM, and Université Sainte-Anne on Sunday, Jan. 18th at 11:00 AM. Meanwhile, the Men’s Volleyball team starts their semester on the road as well with a double-header against Université Sainte-Anne; catch them Saturday, Jan. 17th at 7:00 PM and Sunday, Jan. 18th at 1:00 PM.
